The Eight RestaurantB+
68-70 Shaftesbury Ave, London W1D 6LZ
· Chinese restaurant, Cantonese restaurant
· The West End
A busy Chinatown Cantonese spot with strong Hong Kong-style comfort food, fast service, and real crowding/queue tradeoffs; worth it if you want classic dishes, not if you want calm dining or flawless consistency.
Our take
The Eight delivers solid food quality anchored by standout roast meats, wontons, and noodles, but inconsistent execution across dishes prevents a higher grade. Service is efficient and the West End location offers genuine convenience appeal, yet uneven attentiveness and variable seasoning keep this reliable neighborhood spot from reaching grade A territory.
One caveat: Some diners found the execution uneven, especially on roast meats and noodles, so don’t expect every plate to be a home run.
Standout dishes
- Char siu / BBQ pork rice and BBQ combos
- Wonton soup / wonton noodle soup
- Volcano egg dishes
What people love
- The feeling of being transported back to Hong Kong
- Fast, efficient service when the room is packed
- BBQ meats, wonton soup, and roast-duck or char siu plates done well
