Khao BirdB

24 Brewer St, London W1F 0SN · The West End

A lively Soho restaurant serving creative, spicy Northern Thai food with standout dishes and often excellent hospitality, but allow for heat, a 12.5% service charge, and occasional service or comfort lapses.

Our take

Khao Bird delivers bold, carefully executed Thai cooking with knowledgeable service in a vibrant Soho location, but inconsistent seasoning and occasional execution lapses prevent a stronger grade. Food quality shines across most visits, yet variation in consistency and some cramped upstairs seating keep the overall experience from approaching grade A territory. The West End setting and pre-theatre convenience add appeal, though they don't fully offset the reliability concerns.

In more detail

Khao Bird hides behind a modest Brewer Street entrance and opens into a buzzy, barbecue-scented Soho room: relaxed, funky and more bar-like than formal. Diners repeatedly describe warm, funny service and a soundtrack that keeps the room lively without making conversation impossible. It is a particularly useful West End address when dinner has to fit around a show, although upstairs tables can feel tight and hot, and a few visits have suffered from slow or inattentive service. The cooking is the draw: Northern Thai barbecue and Burmese-leaning influences produce punchy, aromatic food rather than the familiar sweet-sour Thai template. Mutton fries, charcoal lemongrass chicken, khao soi, tea-leaf salad and the tartare-style larb give adventurous eaters plenty to explore, with vegan choices and a few halal-labelled dishes on the current menu. Spice is a real part of the experience, and the kitchen is talented but not completely immune to uneven seasoning, availability or execution. Families can make it work, especially with the rice, chicken, tofu, squash curry and doughnut bao, and one group reports being welcomed with a toddler and a large pram. This is not a conventional children’s menu, however: much of the food is spicy, fermented, intensely seasoned or texturally unusual. Picky eaters may need careful ordering and a conversation with the team before arrival.
